Renowned as one of India’s best winter treks, this journey offers a mesmerizing experience through snow-covered forests, breathtaking mountain vistas, and the opportunity to view the majestic Nanda Devi peak up close. Located in Uttarakhand’s Garhwal region, the winter Kuari Pass Trek caters to both novice and experienced trekkers, making it a must-visit destination for anyone eager to explore winter trekking in the region.

Often referred to as “Curzon’s Trail,” the Kuari Pass Trek follows a historic route first explored by Lord Curzon. The trek reaches an altitude of 12,750 feet and begins from the charming town of Pipalkoti, passing through Gulling Top, Tali Forest Camp, and finally reaching Kuari Pass. This winter trek offers spectacular views of peaks like Gauri Parbat, Nanda Ghunti, Hathi Parbat, Neelkanth, Dronagiri, Kamet, and Lampak I & II, among others.

The journey takes you through dense forests, picturesque meadows like Gorson Bugyal, and alpine zones, showcasing the dynamic beauty of the changing seasons. In winter, the landscape transforms into a snowy wonderland, where crisp, clear air and pristine white scenery greet you at every turn.

With a moderate difficulty level, the trek is accessible to both seasoned adventurers and fit beginners. Typically spanning 6-7 days, it offers ample time to fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty and tranquility of the area. Along the way, you’ll visit traditional villages, engage with local communities, and experience a serene escape from the chaos of urban life.

As you walk through snow-laden forests, the trees appear uniquely different, with golden oaks and tall pines dusted in snow. Occasionally, glimpses of the yellow and green leaves of the trees peek through the white blanket. Above, towering trees obscure the sky, and the sun gently filters through their branches, guiding you on your journey.

Even for experienced trekkers, the snow-covered forests of Kuari Pass are awe-inspiring. The landscape’s beauty, especially the serene campsite nestled within the woods, makes this trek a perfect blend of adventure and natural splendor. After a day of exploring this winter paradise, resting in the heart of the forest under a blanket of stars is the ultimate way to conclude this unforgettable adventure.

  • Altitude: 1,350m/4,400ft
  • Drive Distance: 220 km | 9-10 hours
  • Accommodation: Guest House

Your journey begins in Rishikesh, a city renowned for its spiritual ambiance and adventure activities. After an early breakfast in Pipalkoti, begin your scenic 2-3 hour drive to Tugasi village, located at 2,450m. The winding, rocky roads offer breathtaking views of the Garhwal landscape, setting the tone for the adventure that lies ahead. Tugasi marks the start of your trek, and from here, the trail gradually ascends through charming mountain villages, offering a balance of both steep and gradual climbs.

The trek begins through agricultural land with terraced farms, a hallmark of the region. While the greenery may be sparse, the panoramic vistas of the Garhwal frontier more than make up for it. As you ascend, keep an eye out for the Dhauli-Ganga River far below and the Vishnugad-Tapovan Hydroelectric Power Station in the distance.

As you leave the terraced farms behind and the trail steepens, the breathtaking Dronagiri Peak comes into view. Its rugged beauty adds an almost mystical element to the landscape. The trail then opens into a meadow as you reach Gulling Top, where the camp will be set up for the night.

From the Gulling campsite, the towering peaks of Dronagiri, Hathi Parvat, and Gauri Parbat dominate the horizon. The evening is magical as the sun sets behind the mountains, bathing the landscape in golden light. Surrounded by oak forests and the stillness of the meadow, this peaceful spot offers the perfect setting to unwind and enjoy the serenity of the mountains.

How-Winter-Kuari-Pass-Looks-On-Day-2

  • Altitude: 3,350m (11,100ft)
  • Trek Distance: 5 km | 4-5 hours
  • Altitude Gain: 600m (2,100ft)
  • Accommodation: Tent
Peaks Spotted: Nanda Devi, Kalanka, Chang Bang, Dronagiri, Hathi Parvat, Gauri Parbat

Wake up at Gulling Top to the stunning views of Dronagiri Peak, and prepare for a day of trekking through the tranquil forests of Tali. This 5-hour trek will be a more relaxed pace compared to the previous day, allowing you to enjoy the journey at a leisurely rate. The trail ascends gradually with gentle inclines, making it an easier but equally scenic hike.

After about 20 minutes of trekking, you’ll reach a beautiful green clearing. Here, you can pause to take in sweeping panoramic views of the majestic, snow-covered peaks, including Nanda Devi, Kalanka, Chang Bang, Hathi Parvat, and Gauri Parbat. Once you’ve soaked in the beauty of the surroundings, you’ll continue onward, crossing a stream that marks the entrance to the dense forest.

The trail leads you into a mixed forest of oak, rhododendron, and walnut trees. If you’re trekking in late March or early April, you might witness the vibrant pink and white rhododendron blossoms adding a burst of color to the landscape. In winter, the forest transforms into a winter wonderland, where the snow-covered trees and the play of light and shadow create a magical atmosphere.

As you trek further, you’ll catch glimpses of Hathi Parvat and Gauri Parbat, their snow-dusted peaks shimmering in the sunlight. Dronagiri, which has been a constant presence along the trail, now reveals a different angle, showcasing even more of its majestic grandeur.

You’ll reach Tali Forest Camp, nestled deep within the ancient woods. Surrounded by towering trees and distant snow-capped peaks, this is the perfect place to set up camp for the night. Relax and unwind as you take in the beauty of the Himalayas. As you drift off to sleep, the quiet rustling of the forest will serenade you, and you’ll look forward to the even more awe-inspiring vistas the next day.

    How-Winter-Kuari-Pass-Looks-On-Day-3

  • Altitude:
    Khulara Top: 3,650m (12,000ft)
    Kuari Pass: 3,900m (12,750ft)

  • Trek Distance: 10-11 km | 8-9 hours

  • Accommodation: Tent

  • Peaks Spotted: Chaukhamba, Balakun, Neel Kantha, Mukut Parvat, Kamet, Abhi Gamin, Mana I, Gauri Parbat, Hathi Parvat, Dronagiri, Kalanka, Chang Bang, Nanda Devi, Nanda Ghunti, Pangarchulla Peak

This is the summit day of the Kuari Pass trek and the toughest challenge of the journey. Prepare for a long, demanding 8-9 hour trek that will lead you through some of the most stunning terrain and panoramic views the Garhwal region has to offer. Be sure to carry enough water, as there are no water sources along the route.

After trekking 2 kilometers from Tali Forest, you’ll reach Jhandi Top, a perfect spot for a well-deserved rest. Known for its stunning surroundings and panoramic views, Jhandi Top is an ideal place to pause and take in the beauty of the area. It’s also a convenient stopping point for those who may not wish to continue further.

From Jhandi Top, the trail gradually becomes moderately steep, revealing snow-capped Himalayan peaks in the distance. After another 1 km, you’ll reach Khulara Top, where an expansive, open landscape offers a breathtaking view of towering peaks. It’s a great spot to stop and take in the majestic scenery. Lunch can be carried along and enjoyed during this break.

The next section is a challenging traverse walk to a frozen stream near a broken bridge at 3,750m. This 1.5 km stretch is demanding, but the views make it worthwhile. The real test begins with a strenuous 1 km climb to the Kuari Pass itself. This is the most taxing part of the trek, especially when covered in snow. You’ll feel the altitude as you ascend, so frequent short breaks will help manage the exertion.

As you near the Kuari Pass, the view opens up to a magnificent panorama of Himalayan peaks. The sight of Kedarnath Peak, Chaukhamba, Neelkantha, and Nanda Devi, among others, will make every step of the journey worth it.

It’s also crucial to be well-equipped for the snow. Let’s Go UbEx provides all the necessary gear, including crampons and gaiters, to ensure a safe and memorable trek.

How-Winter-Kuari-Pass-Looks-On-Day-4

  • Altitude:
    Tali Lake: 3,550m (11,500ft)
    Gurson Bugyal: 3,400m (11,150ft)
    Auli: 2,900m (9,500ft)

  • Trek Distance: 9 km | 6-7 hours

  • Accommodation: Tent
    Drive Distance: 45 km | 1 hr 30 min

If weather and snow conditions allow, we will return via Gorson Bugyal or Auli; otherwise, we will retrace our route through Tugasi.

After your final breakfast at the Tali campsite, you’ll begin the last leg of your trek, taking you through some of the most scenic landscapes of the journey. Starting from Tali Lake, a short 1 km walk will lead you to this stunning high-altitude alpine lake, situated at 3,550m. In winter, the lake often freezes, creating a serene and ethereal atmosphere as the surrounding peaks are reflected on its surface.

Next, you’ll embark on a 3.5 km trek to Gurson Bugyal. This high-altitude meadow is one of the most picturesque parts of the entire Kuari Pass trek. As you step into Gurson Bugyal, you’ll be greeted by sprawling snow-covered pastures and panoramic views of snow-clad mountains. The meadow is an ideal place to pause and soak in the stunning surroundings, with towering peaks like Nanda Devi and Dronagiri in view.

From Gurson Bugyal, you’ll begin the descent to Auli via a 4.5 km trek, which is gentle and pleasant, unlike the steeper ascents you’ve encountered earlier. Auli, located at 2,900m, offers spectacular views of snow-blanketed slopes, making it a haven for adventure enthusiasts. In winter, Auli is one of India’s most popular skiing destinations, but it is equally beautiful during the thawing months of February and March, when skiing remains a major attraction.

Once you reach Auli, you’ll have the option to take a cable car ride (at your own expense) to experience the views from above. The ride offers sweeping vistas of the slopes, pine forests, and distant snow-capped peaks.

After concluding your trek in Auli, a vehicle will take you on a 45 km drive back to Pipalkoti, which takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. Once you arrive at Pipalkoti, you’ll be greeted with evening tea. The day will wrap up with a debriefing session followed by dinner, providing a chance to unwind and share stories of your trek before heading home.

  • Drive Distance: 220 km | approx. 9 hours

The last day of your Kuari Pass trek begins with an early start from Pipalkoti, departing around 7 am. After days of trekking through the Himalayan wilderness, this day marks your return journey to the holy city of Rishikesh. Although the drive takes about 9 hours, it offers its own serene beauty, with familiar landscapes from your journey up.

The route from Pipalkoti to Rishikesh is a winding descent through the Garhwal Himalayas. You’ll travel along the famous Badrinath Road, a key highway connecting pilgrims and adventurers to the sacred sites of Uttarakhand. As you pass through villages and small towns nestled in the foothills, you’ll get glimpses of daily life in the mountains.

On this drive, you’ll again encounter the four sacred river confluences that define this route. Be sure to look out for Devprayag, where the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda Rivers converge to form the holy Ganga, a sight of immense spiritual significance. The views of these river valleys are spectacular, with emerald green waters winding through deep gorges, surrounded by lush forests and towering mountains.

Breakfast and lunch will be enjoyed en route at a roadside inn (exclusive of charges). Take this opportunity to stretch your legs and breathe in the fresh mountain air one last time.

As you approach Rishikesh, the landscape gradually shifts from rugged mountains to lush hills, finally leading you to the bustling, spiritual atmosphere of the town. Known as the Yoga Capital of the World, Rishikesh marks the end of your trek, with its peaceful riverside ghats, temples, and ashrams. If you have extra time, enjoy a tranquil evening by the river or a visit to the Ram Jhula or Lakshman Jhula bridges.

You’ll reach Rishikesh between 4-5 pm, allowing you time to relax and reflect on your trek before any onward travel. It’s recommended to book your transport from Rishikesh for after 8 pm, giving you ample time in case of delays.

This final leg of your journey is not just a physical return but a chance to process the experiences and memories you’ve gained during your trek. The Himalayas have a way of leaving a lasting impression that stays with you long after you’ve returned to the everyday world.
