Trek overview
The Dodital Trek, situated at an altitude of 3310 meters, is an ideal choice for both beginners and seasoned trekkers. If you’re considering beginning your trekking journey, Dodital offers a welcoming and scenic introduction to the Himalayas.
The journey begins in the quaint village of Sangamchatti near Uttarkashi. From there, you’ll trek through lush forests and along the Asi Ganga River, reaching the serene campsite at Bebra while passing through the charming settlement of Agoda. On Day 3, the trek leads to the Manjhi campsite, and the following day brings you to the crystal-clear Dodital Lake. After a night of lakeside camping, you’ll ascend to Darwa Top the next morning before returning to Dodital.
The final leg of the journey takes you through dense forests and open meadows to Darwa Pass—a vantage point offering sweeping views of the Dhauladhar Range and other stunning Himalayan peaks.
What to Expect on the Dodital Trek
The Dodital Trek is rated easy to moderate, reaching a peak altitude of 4200 meters at Darwa Top. While the trek is accessible, it’s 22 kilometers long, so preparing a month in advance is recommended. The trail follows the Asi Ganga River, originating from Dodital Lake, and presents diverse landscapes year-round. In summer, the trail is lush and vibrant, perfect for birdwatching and recreational activities like boating and angling. In winter, snow transforms the area into a magical landscape, with snow-covered forests and ridges. Though trekking in knee-deep snow can be challenging, the views are absolutely rewarding.
Temperatures in Dodital range from 10°C to 18°C in summer, and drop between -5°C and -10°C in winter. The trail passes through picturesque villages such as Agoda, Bebra, and Manjhi, and features gentle slopes, mountain grasslands, and peaceful campsites, allowing trekkers to savor the natural beauty of the region.
Although there are some steep sections, the altitude is moderate, and the dense forests ensure ample oxygen, making altitude sickness unlikely. This trek is a wonderful blend of stunning scenery and accessibility, making it a fantastic choice for those eager to experience the beauty of the Himalayas.
Why Dodital is a Must-Do Trek
Dodital, a hidden paradise in the Uttarakhand Himalayas, is among the most beautiful high-altitude lakes in northern India. This emerald lake, nestled amidst towering mountains, creates a serene and tranquil atmosphere. Named after the Himalayan trout, locally called “Dodi,” it’s one of the few lakes where you can still find this rare fish.
The 22 km trek to Dodital begins at Sangamchatti. It’s an easy trek but becomes moderately challenging if you extend to Darwa Pass, which offers breathtaking views of the vast Himalayan range. Dodital Lake itself spans 1.5 km in circumference and is surrounded by lush Deodar trees. A temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha sits on the lake’s edge, with local legends saying this is where the deity was born.
Dodital is also a haven for birdwatchers, with sightings of species like the Bush Robin, Tailor Bird, Grey Shrike, Pink Finch, Himalayan Whistling Thrush, Common Chiffchaff, Himalayan Tree Pie, and the colorful Himalayan Monal.
This trek is ideal for both trekking enthusiasts and nature lovers. With its gentle trails and scenic surroundings, Dodital provides a perfect introduction to Himalayan trekking, making it accessible for all who wish to explore the region’s beauty.
Details Itinerary
Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Dehradun to Uttarkashi, where our team will pick you up from a designated point. The 140 km drive takes about 5 to 6 hours, winding through the lush Himalayan terrain, past dense forests, and sacred temples that dot the route.
Uttarkashi, nestled along the Bhagirathi River, is a vibrant town renowned for its rich cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes. Surrounded by panoramic mountain views, Uttarkashi is also home to the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, a prominent training center for aspiring mountaineers. The town’s spiritual essence is evident in its numerous temples, with the Vishwanath Temple being the most iconic. Located in the town center, this ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and features a remarkable 56 cm-high Shivalingam with a distinct tilt towards the south. The temple complex also houses shrines dedicated to Markandeya Rishi, Ganpati, and Sakshi Gopal, with the Akhand Abhishek and Akhand Jyoti rituals being central attractions that bring blessings and happiness to visitors.
While in Uttarkashi, you may also wish to visit other notable temples such as Markandeya Rishi, Kuteti Devi, Gopeshwar Mahadev, and Koteshwar Mahadev, each steeped in local legends and history.
Beyond its spiritual sites, Uttarkashi is a hub for adventure enthusiasts, serving as the gateway to several popular treks, including Dyara Bugyal, Kedartal, Sat Tal, and Har Ki Dun. The town also has a bustling market, providing a final opportunity to withdraw cash or stock up on any last-minute essentials.
After a day of exploration and preparation, you’ll rest overnight at a comfortable hotel in Uttarkashi, ready to embark on your trek from Sangamchatti the next morning.
The winding trail from Sangamchatti leads through lush green landscapes, which transform into a snowy wonderland during winter. About 5 km into the journey, you’ll arrive at the village of Agoda, where distant views of Bakra Top and Dayara Bugyal are visible. From Agoda, the path to Bebra is a gentle descent into a valley, making it a less strenuous section of the trek. Along the way, you’ll find tea shacks perfect for a quick rest and refreshment.
By early evening, you’ll reach Bebra, a picturesque village set near a lively stream and surrounded by green fields. The area is dotted with local farms growing potatoes, beans, and Rajma. Here, you’ll set up camp for the night. After a hearty dinner, you’ll settle into your tent, ready for a restful night’s sleep in preparation for the next day’s trek.
Dodital is nestled in a breathtakingly beautiful location, making it a dream destination for nature lovers and photographers alike. As you approach the lake, the view becomes more and more stunning, with the first sight of the lake framed by towering, snow-covered peaks. The tranquility of the lake, combined with the vastness of the surrounding mountains, creates an atmosphere of peace and contentment—a perfect reward for your efforts.
You’ll reach Dodital by the afternoon, giving you plenty of time to relax and explore the area. Camp will be set up near the lakeside, where you can take in the spectacular surroundings. If the skies are clear, a canopy of stars will light up the night, creating a magical atmosphere. You can also visit the Ganpati Temple situated at the edge of the lake. According to legend, this is the place where Lord Ganesha is said to have been born.
Dinner will be served hot at the campsite, and after a satisfying meal, you can rest in your tents, ready for the next day’s adventure.
Dodital Lake is located in a picturesque setting, making it a dream destination for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike. As you near the lake, the first sight of its sparkling waters, framed by snow-capped peaks, will leave you mesmerized. The expansive views of the mountains and the peaceful surroundings of the lake will soothe your mind and spirit, offering the perfect respite after a day of trekking.
You’ll reach Dodital by afternoon, giving you plenty of time to explore the serene surroundings. Camp will be set up near the lakeside, where you can relax and take in the breathtaking beauty of the area. If the skies are clear, you’ll be treated to a stunning canopy of stars overhead as night falls. You can also visit the Ganpati Temple situated at the corner of the lake. According to local legend, Dodital is the birthplace of Lord Ganesha.
After a day of exploration, enjoy a warm and hearty dinner at the campsite, then settle into your tent for a peaceful night under the stars.
The trek begins through a scenic landscape, with Rhododendron trees dotting the path. As you climb higher, the tree line gradually gives way, revealing panoramic mountain views. The final stretch is particularly strenuous, as the trail becomes steep and long. However, the effort is rewarded with magnificent vistas once you reach the summit. From Darwa Top, you can enjoy views of the Bandarpoonch Massif and several other towering peaks, including Draupadi Ka Danda (5,600m), Srikanta (6,140m), Jaonli (6,000m), Kala Nag (6,387m), and the Swargarohini range (6,200m).
After soaking in the spectacular sights at the top, we’ll return to Dodital Lake. In winter, reaching beyond Dodital can be challenging, so the return from here often marks the end of the trek. Upon arrival at the campsite, you’ll be treated to delicious snacks, followed by a hearty dinner. The night will be spent camping by the tranquil Dodital Lake, under the stars.
On the final day of your trek, you’ll cover the longest distance of the journey—22 km in a single hike. We’ll retrace our steps along the same route, passing through the villages of Manjhi, Bebra, and Agoda once again.
The descent from Manjhi is quite steep, so it’s important to be cautious on the rocky paths. As you make your way down, the landscape will continue to unfold beautifully. You can expect to reach Sangamchatti by early evening. After completing the trek, we’ll drive the short 12 km back to Uttarkashi.
Once in Uttarkashi, you’ll check into a comfortable hotel to rest and recover after an exhilarating day of trekking. Enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep after the adventure!
